Interesting Facts about Rev. John C. Holland Awards

1. John Holland was born on Christmas Day.
2. John Holland persuaded Stelco to hire Black men.
3. The first event was held at the Royal Connaught.
4. The awards started with a meeting in a living room.
5. The Awards event is the largest Black History Month event in the Golden Horseshoe.
6. Hamilton’s first Black History Month event was held in the Union Gas Blue Flame Room.
7. John Holland’s efforts kept Stewart Memorial Church from closing.
8. The John C. Holland Awards is the only Hamilton sesquicentennial event still celebrated
9. The Awards led to the creation of the John Holland Institute for Leadership.
10. We’ve served 7800 meals since the beginning.
11. Three sponsors have been with us since day one.
12. Ward 3 Councillor Matthew Green was an award winner in 2007.
13. $110,000 in scholarships have been awarded since 1996.
14. Two of our youth winners have attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
15. We’ve recognized 150 award winners so far.
16. Youth Scholarships have been given to 77 students.
17. The Honourable Lincoln Alexander has both won an award and now as an award named after him.
18. The event is supported solely by ticket sales and sponsorships.
19. We’re launching a 20th anniversary commemorative book at this year’s event.
20. This is the first year we’re hosting a dance
